Jockey Trainer combinations by course

You often read this sort of comment in the Racing Post – “****** is a significant jockey booking for the yard”. In this article I look at trainer / jockey combinations at different courses. In this article I have looked at the first 11 courses alphabetically with the focus on the combos that have produced the best strike rates at each respective course.

I have only included combinations that have had at least 30 course runs with a minimum strike rate of 10%. The stats go back to the year 2000.

The Fanshawe / Spencer combination have an excellent strike rate at a course where racing is so competitive. Not only that, the return on investment of over 50% is impressive. It is no real surprise to see Aidan O’Brien and Johnny Murtagh high up also – however, many of their runners start at cramped odds so the profits have been minimal.

Mark Johnston and Joe Fanning have the best strike rate, but backing their mounts would have yielded a heavy loss – clearly the prices of the winners have been short on average. Richard Fahey has done well with two separate jockeys and looks a trainer to note.

Perhaps the most impressive figures are the Fahey / Hanagan combination considering the significant number of rides. Fahey appears twice in the list and thanks to winners at 40/1 and 50/1 his combination with Tony Hamilton has provided huge profits.

An outstanding 4 in 10 strike rate for Sir Mark Prescott and Seb Sanders – they are a serious combination at the track. For the record take particular note of horses that are upped in distance with this pairing as they have provided 9 winners from 15 (SR 60%) for a profit of £10.05 (ROI +67%). The Wood / Doe combination is one to note especially as they have provided an impressive 5 winners at double figure odds (from 27 runners).

Carlisle has very few meetings each year and therefore only four combinations make the list. Mark Johnston and Joe Fanning top the list and have produced decent profits.

The father son combination of Dandy Nicholls and Adrian Nicholls have a good record here and it is particularly good over 5 furlongs – 8 wins from 32 runners (SR 25%) for a profit of £20.00 (ROI +62.5%). BarryHills is renowned for his record at Chester but overall he has still made a loss.

The Godolphin pairing of Bin Suroor and Dettori have an excellent strike rate in excess of 1 win in 3 with a solid profit to boot. That is an impressive performance at a Grade 1 course.

Once again the pairing of Bin Suroor and Dettori head the list at a Grade 1 track. A good strike rate and a strike rate fully 10% higher than the second on the list.

Clearly all statistics can be useful and I hope these tables will help you in your battle to make profits from racing.
